Local residents can help low-income new moms in Sacramento this holiday season through the Sacramento Life Center’s annual Baskets4Babies drive running through Dec. 31. The drive stocks the Sacramento Life Center’s baby needs center so the nonprofit can provide a basket of needed items to every patient who gives birth in 2022. Donations can be made in any increment, but $50 guarantees a new mother has everything she needs to bring her baby home from the hospital, including diapers, clothing, bottles, formula, homemade blankets, bibs, bathing supplies and more. A pledge of $50 per month guarantees a mother can return each month to the baby needs center for additional necessities until her child is 2 years old. “It’s been an exhausting year for everyone, but especially for pregnant women and new moms in need,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “Having supportive people surrounding them makes all the difference. Sac Life Center See Dad Run Event Raises Nearly $13,000

Local residents raised $12,915 for Sacramento’s low-income pregnant women and teens on Father’s Day weekend through the Sacramento Life Center’s See Dad Run virtual fundraiser that gave people the chance to walk or run where and when they wanted as individuals or teams.

“This was such a fun event and a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air and get some exercise while honoring dads and helping pregnant women in need,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “Thank you to everyone who participated. Even as we face this pandemic, the Sacramento region still knows the importance of community coming together to help those most in need.”

Some participants and teams chose to hike their favorite trails at William Pond Park in Carmichael or Tahoe National Forest, while others walked around their neighborhood. Dr. Timothy Phelan ran 25 miles from his practice in Folsom to the Sacramento Life Center in the Arden area. Teams that raised $200 or more received ice cream for four at Leatherby’s Family Creamery.

See Dad Run to Benefit Sac Life Center

Local residents can walk or run where and when they want on Father’s Day weekend and raise funds for Sacramento’s low-income pregnant women and teens through the Sacramento Life Center’s See Dad Run fundraiser. The event will take place on June 20 and will allow for social distancing by giving participants the chance to hike their favorite trail or walk around the block, either as an individual or a team. Those who raise $200 or more will receive ice cream for four at Leatherby’s Family Creamery. Registration is $10 per individual or $25 per team. Baby Basket Drive Raises $16K for Sacramento Life Center

The Sacramento Life Center’s sixth annual Baby Basket Drive for new moms raised $16,000 from the community in December, which will buy 320 baskets for Sacramento Life Center patients throughout 2020. The drive is held each December to kickstart the 500 baby baskets needed so that every Sacramento Life Center patient who gives birth in the coming year can receive a basket of needed items, including formula, diapers, newborn clothes, pacifiers and more. Last year’s drive raised $10,000.

Donations will be accepted throughout 2020 and can be made online at www.saclife.org by writing Baby Basket Drive in the message box on the donation page. Gifts can be made in any increment, but a donation of $50 buys one basket.

Sacramento Life Center Receives $50K Grant from Irwin Foundation

The William G. Irwin Foundation recently awarded $50,000 to the Sacramento Life Center to help pay off the mortgage on the group’s medical facility. The grant will allow Sacramento Life Center to free up funding for current programs, as well as future programs such as prenatal medical care and well-woman exams for low-income pregnant women and teen girls. Since moving to the expanded medical facility in 2016, the Sacramento Life Center has seen a 30 percent increase in women, teen girls and couples seeking services.

“We are incredibly grateful to the William G. Irwin Foundation for its generous investment in the health of low-income women and teens in our community,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “This capital grant will help the Sacramento Life Center fund current and new programs for the next two decades, helping thousands of mothers and their children receive free medical care – especially those who have nowhere to turn.”

The Sacramento Life Center serves some of the most vulnerable women and children in Sacramento County. The majority of patients face serious financial challenges, and increasing numbers are battling unemployment, domestic violence, homelessness, drug and alcohol problems, mental illness, sexually transmitted infections and more. Fifty percent of the group’s patients have no medical coverage.

16,000+ Diapers Donated to Sacramento Life Center

Local residents who brought an unopened pack of diapers to any Leatherby’s Family Creamery location on July 20 received a $5 gift card to Leatherby’s, resulting in donations of more than 16,000 diapers for the Sacramento Life Center. Daddy Dave’s Diaper Drive, which took place during National Ice Cream Month, provided diapers for low-income moms in the Sacramento area and honored the life of the ice cream shop’s founder Dave Leatherby Sr. who passed away earlier this year and supported the Sacramento Life Center for decades.

“It was heartwarming to see the Sacramento community come together to support local moms and babies in need, as well as to honor my dad who believed so much in this cause,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “Thank to you everyone who brought diapers or donated online – these diapers mean the world to families in our community.”

Sacramento Life Center has received $5,000 each from the Leonard Family Foundation and Kelly Foundation to provide free medical services to low-income pregnant women and teen girls through the group’s primary clinic located in the Arden area and its Mobile Medical Clinics that travel throughout the Sacramento area.

More than 650 local residents will celebrate the Sacramento Life Center’s free medical care, resources and education for pregnant women and teens at the organization’s annual gala on Nov. 4. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in Sacramento and will include a gourmet dinner, auction packages, raffle baskets, stories of people who have received help from the Sacramento Life Center this year, and guest speaker and author Melissa Ohden.
