Sacramento nonprofit Women’s Empowerment invites women experiencing or at risk of homelessness to attend an orientation for its upcoming nine-week employment-readiness and empowerment program that begins in July. Two more orientations will take place on June 30 and July 2 at Women’s Empowerment, 1590 North A Street in Sacramento, from 10am-noon. Free onsite childcare is available. To sign up, call Women’s Empowerment at 916-669-2307.
“Orientation is an important opportunity for women to walk through our doors and see what’s possible when they find a community that cares deeply about them and their children,” said Lisa Culp, executive director, Women’s Empowerment. “Women learn about our program and then meet individually with our staff members to talk about their unique circumstances and how we can work together to help her and her children rise from homelessness. Women’s Empowerment is always a shame-free zone, and we work with women to ensure they have the resources they need to succeed in our program.”
Each woman begins with the initial nine-week program that includes free transportation assistance, onsite childcare, group classes, and one-on-one work with a social worker, housing navigator, job developer and volunteer career mentor. Each woman who graduates from the initial program can return for services at any point in her life when she needs additional tools, including paid job training and transitional workforce housing.
Women’s Empowerment is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year as the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area designed specifically to help women break the generational cycle of homelessness for themselves and their children. Since 2001, more than 2,000 women have graduated from the program with their 4,000+ children. Women’s Empowerment is primarily funded through private donations from the community and grants.
