Women’s Empowerment Receives $45K from State Street

Women’s Empowerment has received a grant of $45,000 from State Street Foundation to empower Sacramento women and their families to overcome homelessness through education, employment and economic opportunity. State Street provided an additional $6,750 to help with the rising costs of living that are impacting its nonprofit partners.

“We are so thankful to State Street Foundation for supporting our comprehensive long-term solution to homelessness that also meets immediate needs as women navigate the high cost and low availability of housing,” said Lisa Culp, executive director, Women’s Empowerment. “This program ensures women have the tools to secure jobs with upward mobility while also helping them access safe housing they can afford now.”

Women’s Empowerment is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year as the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area designed specifically to help women break the generational cycle of homelessness for themselves and their children. Each woman begins with a nine-week employment-readiness and empowerment program that includes free transportation assistance, onsite childcare, group classes, and one-on-one work with a social worker, housing navigator, job developer and volunteer career mentor. Each woman who graduates from the nine-week program can return for services at any point in her life when she needs additional tools, including paid job training and transitional workforce housing. Since 2001, more than 2,000 women have graduated from the program with their 4,000+ children. Women’s Empowerment is funded through private donations from the community and grants.
