Celebrate Women’s Empowerment’s 20th Anniversary

As Sacramento nonprofit Women’s Empowerment celebrates its 20th anniversary year empowering women and children experiencing homelessness, community members are invited to enjoy take-out meals from local restaurants on Sept. 30 at 6:30pm for the group’s virtual gala fundraiser. The event is sponsored in part by the Poswall Family Foundation and will include a 20th anniversary video featuring graduates from the past two decades, live auction and award presentation. The annual gala is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, raising a fifth of the group’s budget.

Anyone can watch the virtual gala at no cost but should RSVP to receive an early look at auction items. Those who purchase a VIP ticket for $200 will receive a meal for two from their choice of Alaro Craft Brewery, Mulvaney’s B&L or Matteo’s. Meals will include starters, entrées, dessert, and wine or cocktails to enjoy at home while streaming the gala online. Those who become host partners at $1,500 can host up to 10 people, receiving meals from the restaurants, as well as a snack platter, centerpiece and more. Community members also are needed to sponsor graduates at $100 so they can attend a backyard dinner the night of the gala to safely celebrate their success together. “This is a night to gather our incredible community that has made it possible for two decades of women and children to overcome homelessness in the face of daunting hurdles,” said Lisa Culp, executive director, Women’s Empowerment. “As we move into our next decade of work, we carry with us a pandemic and housing crisis. We will need every resource possible to ensure we can continue as a community to support our graduates as they work to rise from homelessness amidst formidable circumstances. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Women’s Empowerment provides a nine-week employment-readiness and empowerment program, paid job training, childcare and support services so women and their children can break the cycle of homelessness. Women’s Empowerment offers the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area designed specifically for women experiencing homelessness and their children. Eighty-two percent of graduates secure a job or enroll in school. Despite the housing crisis, 75 percent regain a safe home for themselves and their children. Women’s Empowerment Gala Goes Virtual May 21

With just a few clicks, community members can attend Women’s Empowerment’s annual gala fundraiser, this year a virtual event themed “WE are Resilient.” The local nonprofit job training and empowerment program for women who are homeless and their children raises a fifth of the organization’s annual budget through the gala, which honors the group’s 1,657 graduates. The event will take place from 6:00-6:45 p.m. and will include videos of the graduates, a live auction, presentation of the To Heal the World Award and Sacramento entertainment artist David Garibaldi in his home studio creating a resilience-themed painting. The award-winning organization has graduated 1,657 homeless women and their 3,792 children. Last year, 70 percent of graduates found homes in the midst of the housing crisis, and 79 percent secured jobs or enrolled in school or training. The program combines self-esteem courses, job training, health classes, support services and paid job training to help homeless women across diverse ages, races and cultures. The event, which raises funds for the organization and honors the group’s 1,574 graduates, will take place 5:30-8:45 p.m. on June 20 at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento, 1209 L Street. At the event, Women’s Empowerment will announce the winner of the 2019 To Heal the World Award, created in honor of founding social worker, Erie Shockey. The award, which was first given to Mayor Darrell Steinberg, recognizes a local hero who inspires others to engage in social change and makes the Sacramento community a better place for all.

Women’s Empowerment Gala Raises More Than $214,000

Five hundred guests at Women’s Empowerment’s 17th Annual Celebration of Independence Gala raised more than $214,000 to support the organization’s job training program for women and mothers experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. The event, which took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Sacramento, had 75 graduates of the program in attendance dressed in ballgowns donated by the community. The evening included a formal dinner, live and silent auctions, live music and inspiring speeches from program graduates.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg presented Amanda Buccina and Rennie Jemmings of Sutter Health with the 2018 To Heal the World Award, created in honor of Women’s Empowerment’s founding social worker Erie Shockey. The award recognizes a local hero who inspires others to engage in social change and make Sacramento a better place for all. The two nurses were honored for providing street medical care to people who are homeless in Sacramento.

“This event is a powerful reminder that when we come together as a community we can break the cycle of homelessness,” said Lisa Culp, executive director, Women’s Empowerment. “From the generosity of our donors to the inspiring words of our program graduates, the Gala was a magical night of celebration. The critical donations raised that night will fund our vital mission of ending homelessness through empowerment and employment.”
