Baby Baskets Needed for New Moms at Sacramento Life Center

As local women and teens spend the holidays preparing to become new moms in the coming year, the Sacramento Life Center is holding its annual Baby Basket Drive through Dec. 31 so it can continue to provide a basket of needed items to every patient who gives birth in 2017. Donations can be made online at www.saclife.org. Gifts can be made in any increment, but a donation of $50 buys one basket, which includes formula, diapers, newborn clothes, pacifiers and more.

“Many of our patients come in scared that they might be pregnant, and it’s our job to provide them with a warm, caring support system and resources that will sustain them long after the baby comes,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “We want to encourage women, teen girls and their partners that they are capable of caring for a child. These baskets give new parents a boost of confidence along with much needed supplies.”

The Sacramento Life Center’s mission is to offer compassion, support, resources and free medical care to women and couples facing an unplanned or unsupported pregnancy. The Sacramento Life Center’s licensed Sac Valley Pregnancy Clinic includes a primary clinic and two Mobile Medical Clinics that provide all services for free, including pregnancy tests, STD tests, ultrasounds, peer counseling for men and women, education and resource referrals. The nonprofit also offers a school-based teen education program, a 24-hour hotline and a program for women seeking support after having an abortion. Sacramento Donates 126 Baby Baskets to Low-Income New Moms

Community members donated $6,300 in December to provide 126 local pregnant women with baby baskets, thanks to the Sacramento Life Center’s Baby Basket Drive. The baskets are filled with needed items including formula, diapers, newborn clothes, pacifiers and more, and are given to every Sacramento Life Center patient after her baby is born.

Last year’s drive raised $4,800 to provide 96 local pregnant women with baby baskets. The Sacramento Life Center expects to need 500 baby baskets for new moms in 2016 and accepts monetary donations and new items year-round. For more information, visit www.saclife.org.

“When pregnant patients come into the Sacramento Life Center, they’re looking for a resource – but we give them an entire support system,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director. “These baby baskets encourage women and teen girls and their partners that they’re capable of caring for a child. When a young woman is pregnant and not sure she can afford diapers, it gives her a boost of hope to receive diapers along with other needed items like clothes, pacifiers and more. This community has now given 126 women hope in 2016, and it’s only January.”

Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Alliance has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Sacramento Life Center to fill 100 baby baskets for low-income new moms in the Sacramento area. Baskets are filled with needed items including formula, diapers, newborn clothes, pacifiers and more, and are given to every Sacramento Life Center patient after her baby is born.

“We want to encourage women and teen girls and their partners that they are capable of caring for a child, and we understand the hurdles that they often face – sometimes as simple as wondering if they will be able to afford diapers,” said Marie Leatherby, executive director, Sacramento Life Center. “We are grateful to the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Alliance for this grant that will give new moms a boost of confidence and needed supplies.”

The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Alliance is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of health in the community through education, funding and volunteer support.
